We knew there would be <em>something<\/em>, most likely a re-release of an old title, and we were correct. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/super-mario-galaxy-super-mario-galaxy-2-for-nintendo-switch-where-to-buy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Super Mario Galaxy<\/em> and <em>Super Mario Galaxy 2<\/em> will be upgraded for the Nintendo Switch 2<\/a> with 4K graphics and other bonus features like the option to forgo motion controls.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div data-nosnippet=\"true\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 \u2013 Nintendo Direct 9.12.2025\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" class=\"js-lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tTYux25TW8Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Who knew that Nintendo would go one step further and make the entire day about <em>Super Mario Galaxy<\/em>? The sequel to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denofgeek.com\/movies\/super-mario-bros-movie-review\/\"><em>The<\/em> <em>Super Mario Bros. Movie<\/em><\/a> from 2023 officially has a title and release date: <em>The Super Mario Galaxy Movie<\/em> will release in theaters in April 2026. Mario\u2019s tales in space will take up so much of the plumber&#8217;s time in the next six months that he should volunteer for Elon Musk\u2019s mission to Mars (much better than sending real humans and the dangers that come with that, right?)\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div data-nosnippet=\"true\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Super Mario Galaxy Movie \u2013 Official Title Announcement\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" class=\"js-lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RC56sjMdKuU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Super Mario Galaxy<\/em> holds a special place in my gaming heart, and I\u2019m sure it does for many other mid-\u201990s kids. The first game came out when I was around 12 years old, and the sequel when I was starting high school. Just as my world was getting a whole lot bigger and scarier with puberty and growing up, Mario\u2019s trips to the galaxies beyond ours were simultaneously comforting and daring. They transformed Mario\u2019s adventures on a grand scale and made the universe feel so much heavier than before. Mario was more than just the dude saving the Mushroom Kingdom, now. The mustachioed hero belonged to the whole universe!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\r\n\n\t\t<div class=\"ad-dog__cnx-container\"><script id=\"0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796\">\n\t\t\tcnx.cmd.push(function() {\n\t\t\t\tcnx({\n\t\t\t\t\tplayerId: \"106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530\",\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t}).render(\"0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796\");\n\t\t\t});\n\t\t<\/script><\/div>\n\t\n\n\n<p>Nintendo\u2019s decision to revisit these games and introduce them to new audiences through the movie demonstrates the company\u2019s reverence and appreciation for its own work. <em>Super Mario Galaxy<\/em> is Mario at his absolute peak. An orchestrated soundtrack, visuals that pushed the Wii to its limits, and levels that departed from the traditional sandbox style of play make this sub-franchise arguably the best in Mario\u2019s entire 40-year history, and Nintendo certainly seems to be agreeing with this sentiment with these anniversary celebrations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-super-mario-galaxy-corrected-the-errors-of-super-mario-sunshine\">Super Mario Galaxy Corrected the Errors of Super Mario Sunshine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The time period that <em>Super Mario Galaxy<\/em> came out in was a somewhat tenuous one for Mario. The previous 3D platformer before <em>Galaxy<\/em> was <em>Super Mario Sunshine<\/em>, perhaps the most controversial title in Mario\u2019s canon. Unlike <em>The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine<\/em> hasn\u2019t really become beloved in the decades since it came out. Wonky controls and frustrating difficulty were the tip of the iceberg for fans who thought the game was just doing too much. It\u2019s an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denofgeek.com\/games\/super-mario-sunshine-retrospective-future-of-the-franchise\/\">incredible game if you can overlook some of its flaws<\/a>, but casual gamers aren\u2019t really known for doing that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Super Mario Galaxy<\/em> immediately corrected the controls by making Mario operate much more tightly and within reason. No longer did he need to be so precise, as power-ups like the Bee Suit and the ability to spin in the air made him more acrobatic than ever before. The motion controls for the Wii were used intuitively and not excessively (a complaint that was applied to many other big releases on the console).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div data-nosnippet=\"true\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Buzzing with Adventure: Super Mario Galaxy Bee Suit in Action! \ud83d\udc1d\ud83c\udf0c\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" class=\"js-lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qnIN52AleDo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being set in space, this is not an open-world adventure. <em>Super Mario Galaxy<\/em> ironically contained Mario within different, unique sections of each course. Each level forces the player to stay within a section and accomplish what needs to be done before being catapulted to the next planet. The density of each section makes the levels feel massive, even if the actual size to explore is smaller than in any other 3D <em>Super Mario<\/em> title.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this is to say that <em>Super Mario Galaxy<\/em> perfected Mario\u2019s formula by providing the sense of wonder that <em>Super Mario 64<\/em> and <em>Super Mario Sunshine<\/em> did, while also incorporating old school elements and keeping the action concise like in a 2D platformer. All of the qualities came together, working in unison to mimic and completely inhabit Mario\u2019s special place in gaming lore up to that point and in the years to come.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The series is now retro enough (I can hardly believe that the late 2000s are considered old now, but alas) that Nintendo\u2019s re-release of the games and the movie based on the universe will put these two special games in historical context. Mario has never been more vast, yet so incredibly well-confined. The reach of the <em>Super Mario Bros. Movie<\/em> franchise will only further validate <em>Super Mario Galaxy<\/em> as the cinematic and aesthetic masterpiece that doubles as Mario\u2019s best game.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nintendo fans have been more than a little patient in waiting for the company\u2019s announcement regarding Mario\u2019s 40th anniversary.
